Abstract: Punctures myths presented by pseudoscientific peddlars of packages promoting improvement in intellectual, motor, and social skills. A number of the so-called self-improvement programs have begun to bank on the success of neuroscience and have employed neuroscientific jargon in their promotions and materials. On closer inspection, there is virtually no credible scientific support for the programs. The types of programs available include neurolinguistic programming (brain training via visual imagery exercises), programs based on phrenology, and programs promoting alpha waves through biofeedback. The need for double-blind, placebo-controlled evaluations of all medical, psychological, and educational interventions is stressed. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2005 APA, all rights reserved).
