Childers J H, Saltmarsh R E: Neurolinguistic programming in the context of group counseling. Journal for Specialists in Group Work 11(4): 221-227, 1986.

Abstract: Describes neurolinguistic programming (NLP) in the context of group counseling and explores specific NLP techniques a group leader may use in 5 stages of group development as identified by G. Corey and M. S. Corey (1982). These stages are conceptualized as pregroup, initial, transition, working, and final. The use of NLP techniques in each stage is emphasized (e.g., the NLP technique of matching representational systems during pregroup interviews helps develop the ability to establish and enhance rapport with each prospective group member). It is suggested that the NLP techniques can be appropriately used by group leaders to develop new ways of effectively communicating with members and changing undesirable behaviors.
