Wake L: It's My Life: A case study exploring the role of the therapy relationship
Current Research in NLP 3: 84-94, 2013.
Abstract: This paper aims to gain insight into the therapeutic relationship that exists between a youth worker and adolescent client by investigating the experiences of young people who have utilised the It’s My Life (IML) workbook with their youth workers. The IML workbook uses NLP tools and techniques and has been evaluated as an effective intervention (Tope, Thomas and Jones 2010). Findings suggest that young people found more meaning in the relationship with their young person’s worker than the workbook, which appeared to provide a medium for deeper exploration. They conceptualised their experience of working with their youth worker in a number of ways, including a notion of lacking or finding identity, concepts regarding families, and the importance that they attributed to their worker. The findings contribute to understanding of the therapy relationship in Neurolinguistic Psychotherapy (NLPt) as an attachment process. Recommendations are made for further research and implications for practice.
