Abstract: Data on the conditioned modulation of immune responses are briefly reviewed, and the successful application of conditioning operations to the pharmacotherapy of autoimmune disease in lupus-prone mice is described. These data provide the background for a discussion of the role of conditioning in pharmacotherapy and an experimental analysis of the "placebo effect" as a conditioned response.
