Journal of Counseling Psychology 29(3): 327-330, 1982.
Abstract: The preferred modality by which 50 right-handed female college students encoded experience was assessed by recordings of conjugate eye movements, content analysis of the subject's verbal report, and the subject's self- report. Contrary to the predication of the theory of neurolinguistics programming (NLP), kappa analyses failed to reveal any agreement of the three assessment methods. In addition, each assessment method was shown to be biased toward revealing a particular representational modality. The application of certain principles of NLP in counseling settings was therefore questioned.
